Jonah (2013), Kibwe Tavares 


Jonah is a short film that premiered at the most recent Sundance Film Festival about a small town which is transformed into  a major tourist destination and the problems associated with the transformation. Jonah highlights the effect of getting every thing you want as it might push away what you care most about. Jonah is based on a passage from the Bible  call Jonah and the Whale. Kibwe version of the Jonah is set in the present day. 

Jonah displays themes such as friendship, regret and greed. He feels greed at the begging when his town is producing many new business, tourism and money coming towards him, after his fun stops of being wealth and he can final see the damage that has take place to his relationships with his friend and to his town that was a paradise into a huge tourist attraction. Towards the end of the film after Jonah has grown up you can notice that he has fallen off and spent his money as he is taking the bus like everyone else and inst getting noticed anymore.

The opening scene for Jonah is the two protagonists robbing an tourist for his camera, this show the type of life they had before they became rich and famous. the camera was the actual reason why they became famous.

Their were many different types of shots in Jonah, as the film was based around the giant jumping fish shot were needed to be under the water. There were scenes were you could see were you could see both under the water and above.

Another scene that is repeated in Jonah is giving the Fish a Point of view, they do this at the begging before we actually see the fish, this has also been done so we can see the pollution change of the ocean.

In Jonah their is also another scene comparing the before and after tourism, After tourism you can clearly see the change of amount of pollution and waste.
