Miracle at St. Anna, Spike Lee (2008)


Miracle at St. Anna is based in 1944 Italy, it is a story of four black American soldiers who have all received racism towards them in a point of their life. These four soldiers who get trapped in a Tuscan village in World War II. These men were all apart of the Buffalo army who were a infantry division who were filled with on Black men as the US didn't want to waste White solders during the war.

Shelton Jackson Lee (Spike Lee) was born on March 20 1957, in Atlanta Georgia. Spike Lee's film all have similarities to each other, the all focus on racism and a majority of the cast are black. The majority of his themes are racism crime and sport. Spike Lee is productive has since 1972 he has tried to release a new film every year this has resulted in 37 fill length films. 

Starring in He's got game is Denzel Washington, Spike lee is know for basing his stories around the struggles of black people, this make him chose strong black leads in his films including Denzel Washington and Samuel Jackson.

The opening scene of the film is one of the four protagonists shooting a man in the chest in a public bank. This is confusing as we the audience doesn't find out why until towards the end of the film. the whole story is a flash back from the man who was shooting in the bank towards a young reporter that we meet earlier. the gun that he uses when shooting the man is a German weapon which was famous in both world wars, this is a fore sight to what would be happening and when and were the film is set.
In the battle shots of the film the camera is held by hand to invest the audience more into the panic of war. Still shots were used when looking towards a dead body or a horrific scene.

The genre of this film are war, historical and violence. The themes of Miracle at St. Anna are  love, family, hope, betrayal, disloyalty, gore, religion and racism. Miracle at St. Anna looks at a group of black soldiers who themselves are treated worse than the enemy, this shows how hard life was for the minorities during this era.
