71 is based on the riots in Belfast in 1971 between the Catholic and Protestant religions. 71 follows a young and disorientated British soldier is accidentally abandoned by his unit. 

Yann Demange directed 71 in 2014, this was his first feature full length film. Previously Yann has only directed and produced televisions shows such as Criminal Justice, Dead Set and Top Boy. Yann Demange was born in Paris, France in 1977. 71 stars Jack O'Connell, Sam Reid, Sean Harris and Jack Lowden. 

71 is  a historical thriller that follows Gary Hook (Jack O'Connell) journey the the riots of Northern Ireland, Belfast. there was a civil war between the Catholic and Protestant people. As a British Soldiers he has been assigned to keep peace and help the Protestant people, he is depspised by Catholic people. The Catholic try to kill him while he has been abandoned by his squad behind the enemy line. There are also British Spies who have been deployed to Belfast to monitor the situation. These men are loyal to the cause but are able to switch sides with ease. 


The unit that has been deployed to Northern Ireland are new recruitment they are inexperienced sand this is their first time on the battlefield. this is shown in the incident with the public getting out of hand and leading to gary Hook going missing and another being shot in his head. Prior to his deployment we see Hook interact with his younger brother, we don't get to see but we know that his parent aren't around any more so he is fried to live in a foster home. 


Their is a character in the film who leaves an impact in the film is a young boy who takes Hook to a safe location for soldiers on the Protestant side of the city. Hook spends a small time with him but gives the feeling that he is the same as his little brother.
