UK Comparison between Fish Tank, My Brother Devil and The Selfish Giant.

Andrea Arnold, Clio Bernard all highlight poverty, crime and poor living conditions in their films fish Tank, My Brother the Devil and The Selfish Giant. This is show to the audience who are more likely to be a middle class rather that who the films are based around the working class people. All three films give an inside to working class struggle, all of therm give a different perspective, as Fish tank look through the life of a women, my brother the devil focuses on an Egyptian protagonist instead of the more popular black gangster and Clio Bernard using a younger child who is starting crime for a very young age.

Andrea Arnold who directed Fish Tank once again uses a female protagonist which she is famous for doing in such films as Wasp, Red road and her new film American Honey. Using a female protagonist gives a different view on life of struggles growing up, instead of the more favoured male hood protagonist. Mia isn't the same as her mother or the other girls that are from her area who are busy impressing boys dancing, while Mia is a lot more violent by head butting her previous best friend over provoking statement.

Sally El Hosaini who is the director of My Brother the Devil is an was born in Egypt, this is why she uses an Egyptian  protagonist instead of the favoured black protagonist, My Brother the Devil focuses on racism and religion while andrea Arnold focuses on sexism towards Mia.  My brother the devil also differs as Arbor and Mia as they don't have the family support as Mo.  Mo the protagonist is different from the other as he is pushed away from a life o f crime by his parents and older brother who has gone down that path. Mo and his brother swap places during the film with Rashid being a criminal trying to become clean and Mo being clean to become similar to his brother as a drug dealer.

In The Selfish Giant differs form both My Brother the Devil and Fish Tank and uses a child  protagonist and how their crime affected their school life. Clio Bernard puts some so young through the same struggles as an adult would go through. Arbour's family reflect differently to crime as Mo's mother is happy that her sons are giving her money to survive a life of poverty while Arbour's mother reacts as the same as Mo's father and despises the idea of breaking the law.

All of the directors uses a very different protagonist from all different backgrounds and all live in different parts of the country. This gives the audience a different perspective on poverty and crime as it can affect anyone from anywhere. As all of these protagonists aren't the typical stars of a film about living with poverty.
